City of Orlando Ledger Records

During the period of 1910-1922, several Florida cities kept detailed records of those who died within the city. These records were kept by the cities of Orlando, Ocala, St Augustine and Escambia county - and probably others. They were kept in large ledger books by the Orlando City Department of Health. These were moved to the Florida State Office of Vital Statistics in Jacksonville and are now only available for viewing by appointment. The Orlando ledgers were not continued after 1929.

CFGS previously published two books, Orlando Births 1910-1922 and Orlando Deaths 1910-1922, covering the records in Volume 1 of the Birth & Death Register. This newest book covers deaths from October 22, 1922 to April 30, 1929. The Orlando ledgers were not continued after that date.

Orlando Deaths & Funeral Home Records

During the period of 1910-1922, several Florida cities kept detailed records of those who died within the city. These records were kept in large ledger books by the Orlando City Department of Health. These were moved to the Florida State Office of Vital Statistics in Jacksonville and are now only available for viewing by appointment.

Florida Sanitarium (now Florida Hospital) opened in 1908; Orange General Hospital (now Orlando Health) opened in late 1918. These attracted patients from all of central Florida, as well as many visitors to the area. Thus the records of Orlando deaths include many who were not from Orlando, but died here. This Orlando Death volumes provides the name, date of death, residence, occupation, place of death, length of time in Orlando, cause of death and burial place.

Orange County Florida Marriages 1869-1909

In 1984 the Central Florida Genealogical Society first published an Index for Orange County, Florida marriages from 1869-1899. That edition is now out of print. This book was replaced by a new edition along with corrections, additional years of records and expanded information. All records were re-checked against the original information. The listings are displayed alphabetically by surname of the groom and every name is included in the index. This newer publication, Orange County Florida Marriages 1869-1909 Volumes 1-3, is indexed by surname and includes place of residence and race (where provided).

Volume One of this set includes the marriages from 1869-1909.  This first book of Orange County Marriage Records was divided into four parts designated 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4. Record Book 2 (1899-1909) and Record Book 3 (1909 - 1915) followed. Our Orange County Marriages Volume 1 includes all four parts of the Orange County Records Book 1, all of Orange County Marriage Records Book 2 and the records in Orange County Marriage Records Book 3 up through December 31, 1909. Our Orange County Marriages Volume 2 includes marriages from 1910-1924 as recorded in Orange Co Marriage books 3 (part), 4, &5; our Marriage 3 includes marriages from 1925-Aug 1934, extracted from Orange Co Marriage Books 5 (part), 6, 7 & 8.To purchase a print copy of these volumes please visit our Publications Page.

It should be mentioned here that the boundaries of Orange County changed during the period covered by this publication and that some of the areas mentioned in these records may no longer be in Orange. Orange County originally covered areas now in Brevard, Lake, Osceola and Seminole Counties.  In 1887 Osceola County was formed from the southern part of Orange and parts of Brevard. Lake County was formed about the same time. In 1913 Seminole County was formed out of the northern part of Orange. For more information see the Orange County FlGenWeb and the History of Orange County Florida published in 1927.

Greenwood Cemetery Historical Trail

A visit with over 435 historic Orlandoans at their final resting place written by CFGS member Steve Rajtar. Steve, as a hike leader for the Florida Trails Association, has developed a number of historical hikes in Central Florida and farther afield. One of these was a tour of the city-owned Greenwood Cemetery, which is among the oldest of Central Florida's cemeteries. Through research into a variety of sources, Steve has documented more than 435 of the people who played a part in the history of the area and matched them up to their tombstones in Greenwood. A stroll through Greenwood with the book in hand provides a mini-history of Orlando and surrounding area. [215 pages, with photos and index] $21.00 plus $2.50 shipping
